Titanium dioxide is an important inorganic chemical pigment. The main component of it is TiO2.

Titanium dioxide

Titanium dioxide is found exsit in three crystalline forms in nature

Rutile, anatase and plate titanium. Titanium plate belongs to the rhombic system, which is an unstable crystal type. It will be converted into rutile type when the temperature is up to 650℃. So it has no practical value in industry. Anatase type is stable at room temperature. But at high temperature,it will convert to rutile type. Its transformation strength depends on the manufacturing method and whether there is an inhibitor or accelerator in the calcination process.

In the three isomers of titanium dioxide, only the rutile form is the most stable form. And only the rutile form can be obtained by thermal conversion. Natural plate titanium ore is converted to rutile type at above 650℃. Anatase can also be converted to rutile type at about 915℃.

Titanium dioxide has two forms

Rutile type (Rutile R type) and Anatase type (Anatase A type). Rutile crystal structure is dense, relatively stable, small optical activity. So it has good performance in weather resistance. At the same time,it has good performance in covering, achromatic force.

Titanium dioxide is a kind of amphoteric oxide with very stable chemical properties.Almost no reaction with other elements and compounds at room temperature.Titanium dioxide has no effect on oxygen, ammonia, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. It is also insoluble in dilute acid and inorganic acid, alkali. It is only soluble in hydrofluoric acid.

Titanium dioxide

The main application areas of titanium dioxide

Coatings, plastics, ink, paper, rubber, cosmetics, ceramics and so on.

Titanium dioxide can not only covering and decoration in coatings,solven-based or water based. The more important role of titanium dioxide  is to improve the physical and chemical properties of the coating, enhance its chemical stability, and improve the hiding power, achromatic power, corrosion resistance, light resistance, weather resistance, the mechanical strength and adhesion of the paint film, prevent cracks. It can prevent UV and moisture through, so as to delay aging, prolong the life of paint film. At the same time, it can save materials and increase varieties.

The application of titanium dioxide in plastic products

In addition to the use of its high hiding power, high achromatic power and pigment properties, it can also improve the heat resistance, light resistance, weather resistance of plastic products, protect plastic products from UV light invasion, improve the mechanical and electrical properties of plastic products.
