In my job, I have received many inquiries on barium sulphate, half of them are from customers in powder coating industry. To suggest the most suitable product with competitive price, normally I ask customers everal questions as following:

What kind of powder coating do you make? Interior or exterior?

What is the glossiness of the coating? Matte, semi-gloss, high-gloss?

But not all customers answer the above questions, they only ask for the price of precipitated barium sulphate.

Based on our experience, for matte powder coating and coating with gloss < 80°, natural barium sulphate can replace precipitated barium sulpahte. Natural grade has half price of precipitated grade, it’s much lower.

But some customers don’t know how to use natural grade in production, they even use precipitated grade for matte powder coating, then use matte agent/additive to lower the gloss. In this way, the production cost is very high.

Hence, knowing clearly about powder coating type, and choose suitable barium sulphate, helps get minimum production cost.

For matte/low gloss powder coating, natural barium sulpahte can replace precipitated barium sulphate as a filler, to lower cost. On the other hand, to achieve good smoothness, producers should use good polyester resin and additives like flow agent.
