High Technology UV-LED Lamps from SECU-CHEK

To ensure test results are as reliable as possible, the processes and tools used by employees, suppliers, and others must meet specific NDT standards. Organizations such as DGZfP and several manufacturers publish these standards, enabling companies to achieve critical criteria in UV LED technology with appropriate UV lamps.

SECU-CHEK, a specialized manufacturer of UV LED lights, is a member of DGZfP e.V. and was featured in the NDT newspaper with a technical contribution when the new manufacturer standard Airbus AITM 6- (Issue 11) was published.

SECU-CHEK, the leading provider of UV LED lights for NDT, delivered 10 handheld lights and 6 stationary models from the SECU-CHEK UVE series just two months after Airbus's AITM 6- (Issue 11) standard was released. These models are also qualified according to Rolls-Royce RRES, ASTM-E, and ISO standards.

The UVE series was developed under the aviation slogan "FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION," emphasizing the importance of uncompromising, reliable, and safe testing. The floodlights of the UVE series provide extremely uniform illumination, even at short working distances, with a very gentle radiation drop at the edges. Unlike commercially available UV LED lights, the illumination area is much more uniform with a larger central evaluation area.

The advantages of mercury vapor lamps and LED technology have been combined, allowing these lamps to be tested better, faster, and just as safely as discharge lamp-based UV lamps. Testing costs can be significantly reduced. The microprocessor control, with over 15,000 lines of software code, provides extended functions such as adjustable adaptation time signaling and fully electronic monitoring of the luminaire. For instance, the UV radiation is automatically switched off if a single UV LED element fails or the battery power is insufficient.

Eight of the 16 models feature groundbreaking automatic dimming. The continuous dimming of white light and cross-fading between UV radiation and white light at the push of a button, to the adjustable brightness, enables optimized evaluations without flashing the eyes. Continuous viewing of the fluorescent displays, even when using white light, allows for safer, faster, and fatigue-free assessments without straining the eyes.

To experience the high performance and robustness of these lights in practice, SECU-CHEK offers on-site demonstrations and free one-week test orders.

Building on recent product development successes, Magnaflux, a global leader in NDT products, is introducing the latest addition to their NDT-specific line of LED UV inspection lamps with the EV model.

Designed for nondestructive testing professionals, the EV model improves inspection quality and flexibility by offering 7,000 μW/cm² high-intensity UV-A illumination with broad-coverage 100 ft-candle white light in a single handheld LED lamp. This allows inspectors to effortlessly switch from fluorescent inspection to visible flaw checking with a single device.

Improves Visibility & Versatility

The EV model eliminates the need for a separate flashlight or overhead light for visible spot checking with built-in visible light LEDs, providing 16 inches (41 cm) of bright, concentrated white light for easy, fast visible inspections. "The key difference with the EV model is the wide, even coverage in both UV-A and visible light modes, giving you the ability to see more than ever before," explains David Geis, Magnaflux Product Manager.

Minimizes Time to Inspect Parts

Providing 85 in² (450 cm²) of intense UV illumination area, the EV speeds up inspection time with the widest, most even beam on the market. Indications are clearly visible even at the edge of the 10-inch (25 cm) beam, thanks to the high-intensity, specially designed LED array. "Magnaflux uses custom-designed optics to give the widest UV-A beam area on the market," continued Geis. "With the EV model, we've expanded that to visible light as well, providing over 100 ft-candles of light out to a 16-inch diameter."

Increases Real-World Inspection Reliability

Engineered specifically for NDT environments to reduce on-the-job downtime, this portable UV lamp features dependable, reinforced construction, along with a fully sealed housing, fan-less cooling system, and non-clouding lens for reliable, consistent inspections. "As part of our focus on innovation, Magnaflux spent a lot of time with our customers to see how the equipment we make is used in the real world because that's the best way to find new ways to improve the whole inspection process," added Geis. "We've combined high-intensity UV with wide-area visible light, all in a rugged, sealed lamp that will stand up to any environment. When you're working remotely in the field, it's critical for your equipment to perform to get the job done on time."

Safer Working Conditions

With LED technology, the EV model runs much cooler than traditional mercury-vapor lamps, eliminating the possibility of operator burns. The efficient LED array also eliminates hazardous mercury vapor waste generated by traditional UV lamps.

"The EV model is built with the field inspector in mind. Doing magnetic particle or penetrant inspections in the field often means working in less-than-ideal conditions with high ambient light. This requires higher UV-A intensity to boost contrast and make indications more visible," explains Geis. "Being able to quickly toggle between UV-A and visible light simplifies the verification of indications, making evaluation easier. Having both functions in a single lamp reduces the amount of equipment needed on site, making the process more efficient."
