Collet Types and Advantages?

Peter: The advantage of the TG or ER collets is that they are "Double angle" collets which means that they close in a more or less paralell fashon, unlike the R8 which has only one taper and that puts most of the clamping force at the end of the collet. There are also such things as i believe "posi-grip" (not sure of the exact name here) that are made in the TG series collets. These are made as a standard double angle TG collet with the addition of a "floating " plunger that when used with a tool with a setscrew notch engages that notch when the collet is drawn up. You get a positive lock with the full contac that a good collet provides. I personally have never had any trouble with the ER collets slipping. However i will add that my ER collets only go up to 10 mm (13\32") for the ER 16. Anything bigger than that and i use the TG100 collets (to 1"). For larger stuff i have some setscrew holders for 1 1/2, 1 1/4" . I use these where speeds are low, and i am not trying to hold size or finish, just hog off the bulk of the stock. Ross
