I understand your confusion, HJ, as it initially seemed perplexing to me as well. Typically, I've only seen #10 wires connected to a maximum of 30 amps when dealing with electric water heaters and air compressors. However, after consulting with a pool pump installer and conducting some research, I discovered that distinct rules apply to specific "electrically driven air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment that incorporates a hermetic refrigerant motor-compressor." These regulations do not encompass regular household appliances such as room air-conditioners, household refrigerators, freezers, drinking water coolers, or beverage dispensing machines.

Conductor Sizing
The sizing is determined by the "Minimum Circuit Ampacity" provided in the equipment specifications. This pool heat pump has a minimum circuit ampacity rating of 35 amps, for which #10 THW wire is appropriate.
Circuit Protection
The protection device, typically a breaker, must safely handle the starting current of the motor-compressor. This device should not exceed 175% of the equipment's load current rating. If necessary, a larger protection device can be used, provided it doesn't surpass 225% of the motor-compressor's current rating.
Thus, employing a #10 wire (which supports 35 amps) and a 60 amp breaker (derived from 27 amp compressor current x 225% = 60.25) is compliant with the code requirements.
Despite this understanding, I intend to use #8 THW wire coupled with the existing 50 amp breaker for now. Given the short 10-foot length, the cost difference is minimal, and it offers peace of mind. Should the 50 amp breaker prove inadequate for the compressor startup, I'll simply upgrade to a 60 amp breaker.
