Cost of living drives family into tiny home and they couldn't ...
Maddy McFie has been living in a tiny home on her family's land in Dwellingup, about 100 kilometres from Perth, for a year.
Key points:
- The median weekly rental price for a house in Perth is $620 and set to rise
- A pregnant mum is confident her tiny home will accommodate her growing family
- An architect says versatility is one of the key strengths of tiny homes
"I was living tiny for about three years in a van and then the rental crisis was happening," she said.
"We were coming back from the eastern states and then we just decided, 'Let's just get a tiny house instead of wasting money on rent.'"
The median cost of a house in Perth is more than $600,000 and according to the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia prices are likely to increase by 10 per cent this year.
The median cost for renting a house was sitting at $620 per week at the end of last year and is also expected to rise.

The Perth mum spent less than $30,000 on the tiny home itself and an additional $15,000 on a driveway.
She said rent was unaffordable for her growing family, so they had swapped the hustle of city living for an off-grid lifestyle.
"I love it," she said.
"I love that I just have this small space to clean."

'Basically plug and play'
Tiny homes range from 15 to 45 square metres in size and can be customised to suit the buyer.
Tiny home designer Anthony Rechichi said most of them came with a kitchen, bathroom and bedroom.
"You just basically plug and play," he said.
But there is some work for the owner to do once the home comes off the back of the track.
"You then need to place them on either some concrete footings or on a steel frame of some sort," Mr Rechichi said.
"Then hook-up and wire-up get your plumbing and your electrical works all in place."

)'Super nice, really easy'
Mr Rechichi said the homes could be placed in a variety of locations.
"Backyard of your house, or anywhere where these types of tiny homes can be of value," he said.
"It could be tourist-type scenarios or they could be student accommodation-type scenarios."
In December the Shire of Esperance became the first region in Australia to implement a tiny house policy.
Ms McFie is encouraging more people to consider tiny home living.
"We have a one-year-old and it's just super nice, really easy," she said.
"More money to spend on other things and I'm pregnant as well, so it's going to be a full house."
